Avoid…

  • Staking the tree improperly - Avoid using materials such as rope, wire or string to tie a tree straight. Use wide and soft materials when tying trees such as a rubber horse. Make sure to remove it after a year or as soon as possible.

  • Pruning excessively

  • Using pesticides or chemical fertilisers

  • Using wood paint on the tree

  • Using high nitrogen fertiliser on trees that are just newly planted – High levels of nitrogen will encourage excessive top growth even before the roots have securely anchored the tree unto the ground.

  • Applying fertiliser with high levels of nitrogen during fall – This will promote vegetative growth that is too late for growing season.

  • Mowing or weed-whacking around the foot of the tree – This is likely to cause physical damage.

  • Tilling near the tree – Avoid planting high maintenance plants under your tree, grow ground covers instead.

  • Compacting the soil around the foot of the tree – Avoid playing, walking or driving over the soil around the tree where the roots are buried.

  • Covering the soil surface around the tree -Putting too much soil or placing impermeable material over the root area of the tree will prevent air and water from reaching the soil and the roots of the tree.

  • Over-mulching – Mulching provides many benefits to trees but too much of it can be damaging. Using too much mulch or creating what gardeners call a “mulch volcano” may prevent sufficient amount of water from getting into the soil and roots which affects the proper and healthy growth of the tree.
