What You Need to Know Before Mulching Your Tree

In order to get the most out of tree mulching, here are some of the things you should keep in mind.

Avoid making “mulch volcanoes”, particularly on young trees. Applying mulch 6” deep may cause more harm than good as excess amount of water may get trapped into the mulch instead of reaching the roots of the tree. Water goes through the sides of a mulch volcano away from the base of the tree which prevents its roots from getting enough water.

Any excess amount of tree mulching triggers diseases and pests and sometimes may suffocate the roots. Apply about 2” of mulch around the tree particularly in young ones. Mulching trees helps in reducing the weeds, which get rids of other competition for water. Also, water that is evaporated by the sun is absorbed by a 2’’ layer of mulch unto the soil and around the roots of the tree. It also helps the roots be warm in cold weather.

When you’re on a budget you can use shredded leaves. You may also use wood chips for mulching. When raking up the leaves, you may use a leaf shredder or simply run them over with a lawnmower. Leaves are also easier to break down compared to wood chips and releases nutrients a lot faster.
